Alexander Michaelís, also known as Al Mikeís Tavern, is a hidden gem in Charlotte. The historic building was built in 1897 and was home to a general store for many years. After the general store closed in the 1960ís, the building hosted a laundromat, then a paint store, and at one point a gym, until 1983 when it was transformed into a restaurant. On April 27th, 1983, Alexander Michaelís opened their doors and has been a staple to the area ever since. When Alexander Michaelís first opened, the menu was very sparse. The chef decided to run specials, which now, many years later, are the core of the menu. Alexander Michaelís tries to keep things as fresh as they can, including all-natural, no-GMO chicken, organic greens and Grateful Growers Farm chops. The menu is quality cooked-to-order comfort food and a great value for your money. At lunch, the ëLondon Broil Sandwichí and ëReubení are very popular choices. For dinner order the ë4th Ward Stroganoffí; beef, mushrooms, red wine and shallots in a sour cream sauce all over rotini pasta. Another customer favorite is the ëWhat It Isí, a delicious all-natural blackened chicken breast served in a cajun cream sauce over rotini.Alexander Michaelís is true to what they are, and offer a real, comfortable, homey feel. Located in a neighborhood so close to uptown but not in the trenches of the craziness, Al Mikeís Tavern offers a different, delightful dining experience.
