In 1973 Michael Stevens opened up Beans and Barley as a small neighborhood health foods shop. Over time and by popular demand, his shop grew into a restaurant, deli, and retail store, serving Milwaukee through in house service and catering. Through the years their principals have remained the same: quality, value, and fun. Beans and Barley has a loyal staff and is dedicated to teaching people cooking and service skills. The donít hire chefs; they teach people to cook. Their workers tend to stick around and work their way up the ladder. Two examples are current owners Polly and Jim. Polly has worked there since 1994, starting as a waitress, then a floor manager, and now an owner. Jim started at age 20 washing dishes, then becoming a line cook, manager, then owner. Beans and Barley specializes in healthy food with an emphasis on vegetarian and vegan options. Their vegan dishes arenít ìgood for vegans,î they are just good. They have a scratch kitchen and always use the freshest ingredients. You wonít find anything frozen or from a can. One of their best selling dishes is their Sweet Potato and Bean Burrito, made with oven roasted sweet potato, black beans, corn, Mexican rice, and guacamole. Another signature dish that Polly recommends is the Chicken Pine Nut Sandwich, made with their homemade lemon shallot mayonnaise. For dessert, try their famous Poppy Seed Cake. Beans and Barley offers beer, wine, and liquor in the dining room, and a full list of smoothies, teas, and coffee. Beans and Barley has plenty to offer, with their full grocery store, restaurant, and deli. In their store you can find anything from health foods, to body care products, to greeting cards. They offer catering off site and do large events like weddings and corporate events. Their location is another draw to the restaurant; they reside within walking distance of Milwaukeeís historic Oriental Theatre. While youíre waiting for a table, they have a waiting area which is great for keeping the kids entertained. Beans and Barley is open seven days a week for breakfast through dinner.
