One of Detroitís attractions, Bertís Market Place Jazz Club multitasks to serve the public as an entertainment venue, a soul-food restaurant, a jazz bar and a beauty salon. Having been running for 28 years, the restaurant and club is owned by Bert Dearing, and run by managers Jai-lee Dearing, Miller London, and Al Gibson. Bert Dearing who grew up in Detroit, has been coming to the market for all his life with his grandfather owning a grocery store. Fueled with his interests, including his interest in jazz for 48 years, Dearing has owned several jazz clubs and saloons in downtown Detroit. He has also been in the restaurant business for 48 years. Every week there is live music at the market place with jazz every Thursday and Friday, blues on Saturday night, and an open mic night on Sunday. The club also offers catering and events for customers. Dearing said that Saturdays are the day where most of the cliental come in to do karaoke and enjoy the atmosphere. Every summer the club has a tradition of cooking outside with karaoke and live music. ìMusic is international. By doing jazz, you get every culture that brings in people from all over." According to its website, Bertís Market Place strives to serve soul food thatís home cooked and seasoned just right. The restaurant section of Bertís has a variety specialty dishes including chicken wings, catfish, burgers, shrimp, pork chops, pizza and barbeque ribs. Dearing is also looking towards importing in a patio in the jazz club, and wants to expand the club more. He said everyday he is looking towards improving the club more.
