Bittersweet Bistro is located at 787 Rio Del Mar Boulevard in Aptos. The restaurant is owned by classically trained Chef Thomas Vinolus and his wife Elizabeth. The eatery is listed prominently in local ìBest Ofî awards including Best Date Night Restaurant, Best Seafood, Best Patio Dining, and Best Restaurant. The original Cafe Bittersweet opened 25 years ago and moved to its current location about 21 years ago. Chef Thomas tells us he always wanted to own his own business. He loves cooking and enjoys making his customers happy. All items served at Bittersweet are made in-house from scratch. Chef Thomas is personally involved daily, ensuring only the finest and freshest ingredients are served in the restaurant. Popular breakfast items served in the Cafe include: Chicken & Waffles featuring hot ‘n’ crunchy almond chicken and bacon served over a bacon belgian waffle and topped with housemade blackberry sauce and the Eggs Benedicts features two eggs poached over a toasted English muffin with fresh homemade hollandaise sauce and served with cottage potatoes. Cafe Lunch options include a Fish Taco Salad with chipotle blackened snapper, black beans, carrots, tomatoes, jicama, avocado, black olives, baby greens, spicy tortilla strips, J&C cheese and a chili-lime vinaigrette. Also, the Blue Bacon Burger, a 1/3 lb angus burger topped with blue cheese, roasted garlic, and bacon served with fries. The Bittersweet Cafe brought the first wood fired pizza oven to the area over two decades ago. The 550 degree oven cooks perfect Neapolitan thin crust pies in only minutes. Favorites are the Abruzze with San Marzano tomato sauce, abruzzese salami, burrata cheese, roasted garlic, oil cured olives, and basil and the Vegetarian with sun-dried tomato, roasted garlic, sweet pepper, bermuda onion, mushroom, pizziola sauce, and mozzarella. Recent Bistro Dinner Specials included a Black Angus Filet Mignon with gorgonzola cabernet demi-glaÁe, garlic mashed potatoes, and seasonal vegetables. Also, the Bittersweet Paella featuring saffron infused rice with assorted fresh fish, prawns, calamari, clams, chicken, Spanish chorizo sausage, sweet peppers, tomatoes, and green beans. Finally, Sesame Encrusted Ahi Tuna made with oriental soy mustard sauce, mÈlange of jasmine, basmati, and wild rice with stir-fried julienne vegetables.The recently opened Bittersweet Sushi features the work of very highly trained sushi chefs combined with input from Chef Thomas, creating unique and tasty signature sushi rolls. These include: the Samurai Roll, the Jay Tea’s Roll, and the The Pincher made with panko crusted soft shell crab & spicy tuna topped with avocado, tuna, tobiko, spicy mayo, and sesame aioli. Bittersweet Sushi entrees include a Samurai Burger that consists of a Teriyaki glazed 1/2 pound chuck and short-rib burger, shoestring crispy onions, avocado, tomato, lettuce, and spicy mayo served with bistro fries.
