Opened in 2009, the restaurant succeeds in bringing an authentic German Bierhall to Philadelphia. Reinforcing the genuine atmosphere is the housemade German food and exposed brick and light wood decor. Born in Aschaffenburg, Germany, owner Brian Hager and his wife Kelly work hard in fulfilling the dream of introducing authentic German fare to Philadelphia. Brian tells us he loves being his own boss and the relationships he has built with both customers and employees. He gets particular satisfaction when friends visit from Germany and tell him they love Brauhausí cuisine. Chef Jeremy Nolen has brought his extensive culinary experience to Brauhaus Schmitz. Jeremy was exposed to artisan charcuterie and hand crafted foods at a young age by his father Ron, who was a butcher and a chef. Popular menu items include Schweinshaxe, a roasted pork shank with crispy crackling skin and tender meat with sauerkraut and| herbed potato dumpling. Other favorite items include any of the sausages. The housemade applesauce and pretzels are also popular. In fact Brauhaus Schmitz sells 15,000 pretzels per year. A diner favorite is the Pork Schnitzel Sandwich accompanied with a delicious potato salad. Brian tells us one of the things he is most proud of is the restaurantís beer program. Brauhaus Schmitz has thirty German Beers on tap. He explains he probably has the most German Beer on tap in the entire world. Significant offerings include Andech Monastery Beer. This beer produced by monks outside of Munich is said have itís recipe given to the monks by God. Other beer rare in the US are varieties of Andorfer. Besides the thirty taps, the restaurant features another eighty by the bottle.The restaurant can cater your special event or party either onsite and off. They host an Oktoberfest at the 23rd Street Armory and do other special events, including chartering busses from the restaurant to Philadelphia Union home games.
