John Stratton is the classically trained chef who is now the owner of Cafe Gourmet. He offers up his own culinary twist on breakfast, lunch and dinner in the Willow Glen neighborhood of San Jose. Upon graduation from the prestigious California Culinary Academy in 2001, John pursued a career in fine dining establishments for a dozen years. Bitten by the entrepreneurial bug, he also bought several hot dog carts. Buoyed by the success of the carts and with his Grandmother as a partner, he opened the doors to Cafe Gourmet two years ago. Popular menu items include the, California Benedict crafted with two Poached Eggs, Apple Wood Smoked Bacon, Cheddar Cheese, Avocado, Hollandaise, Served on a Croissant with Country Style Potatoes. The Fried Chicken Pancake Sandwich is also highly regarded, featuring Two Large Buttermilk Pancakes, Breaded Fried Chicken Breast, Two Eggs Over Easy and Applewood Smoked Bacon. Another favorite, featuring Wagyu style beef, is the Bacon and Blue Cheese Kobe Burger, a Half Pound Organic Kobe Beef Patty, Applewood Smoked Bacon, Blue Cheese, Grilled Onions, Lettuce and Tomato. The restaurant features seating for about forty people and has a children’s menu. They serve wine and beer and have some creative house special cocktails. Besides using only the finest and freshest ingredients, what really stands out at Cafe Gourmet is Stratton’s attention to detail. Everything coming out of the kitchen is perfectly done, and his motto is; ìIf you wouldnít serve it to your mother, donít serve it to customers.î
