Jamey Simoes and Mary Odonohoe are the owners of the Corner Cafe. A prominent feature of the cafe, which opened in 2003, is a line usually stretching out the door. The restaurant is influenced by the background of its owners. Mary came to Rhode Island as a student from Ireland and never left. Jamey is a Rhode Island native whose circuitous route back to Newport included stops in Aspen, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. Their original intent was to combine their eclectic influences to create a warm and inviting breakfast place aimed at attracting local clientele. The ever evolving restaurant has become popular with locals and visitors alike. They have had their French Toast featured on NBCís Today Show and have been recently named best BYOB in Newport. Additional awards include a Best Brunch Award.Breakfast and brunch favorites, which are served all day, include: Portleyís Stuffed Portuguese French Toast, stuffed with fresh berries, banana, and sweet cream and Fitzyís Irish Fry Up, 2 eggs, bangers, rashers, black & white pudding, grilled tomato, and Irish brown bread. Two omelette options include the Dodgy Bob and the Victoria with shrimp, bacon, avocado and provolone. Jamey tells us he thinks it is important for people to eat healthy and he feels a duty to make that easy and delicious for his clientele. Healthy lunch options include Jameyís Veggie Wrap, a warm wheat tortilla layered with baby spinach, broccoli, green peppers, cucumber, red onion, sundried tomato, and feta cheese and Avocado Toast, thick-cut multigrain bread topped with mashed avocado seasoned with salt and black pepper, goat cheese, and diced sun-dried tomato. A small salad or a cup of berries can be added on making for a complete healthy meal. The menu features a bevy of creative burger choices including the popular Elmerito, an Angus burger topped with a fried egg, roasted red peppers, gorgonzola and hollandaise sauce. Other lunch options are a nice mix of salads, sandwiches, and burritos. Thursday, Friday, and Saturday the Corner Cafe stays open for dinner. They have five or six rotating entrees every week. The line up is posted on their facebook page. The wood grilled Cafe Pizzas been drawing crowds for dinner. Current options include the Boca Bella, chicken, shrimp, broccoli, black olives, portobello tossed in a boursin- asiago sauce, and topped with smoked gouda, The Lighthouse, pesto, shrimp, scallops, clams topped with asiago, and parmesan, and The Bayou, sauteed cajun shrimp, sweet Italian sausage, roasted red peppers, cheddar, and smoked gouda garnished with tarragon.Jamey and Mary say keeping the Corner Cafe running smoothly takes a lot of hard work.
