Chef and co-owner Jonathan Klug literally crawled home on the day he reopened Crawdaddyís. It was February 9, 2016 and nearly 800 people mobbed the reopened eatery to celebrate Fat Tuesday in authentic Crescent City style. Chef Jonathan, a Milwaukee native, has an impressive culinary resume, including working in the renowned Chicago restaurant Trio and cooking for the likes of Robert Redford and the cast of Friends. The original Crawdaddyís opened in 1995 and seated about fifty people. Two years later, it became so popular Chef Jonathan relocated to a site three times as large. After eighteen years Crawdaddyís closed its doors 2013. Now resurrected at 9427 W. Greenfield Ave in West Allis, the new restaurant seats about 175. The 19th century windows and wrought iron come directly from Bourbon Street, having been rescued from the devastation incurred by Hurricane Katrina.Ultimately, itís about the food. Crawdaddyís features, authentic, fresh Cajun and Creole cooking. They have an awesome selection of classic Louisiana dishes. Chef Jonathan shares that everything at Crawdaddyís is homemade from scratch and they mix all their own special Cajun seasonings. All the sauces and stocks are made daily on premises. The meat and fish is always fresh and never frozen.Appetizers include fresh oysters, heaven on the half shell. Freshly shucked and ready to be enjoyed. Served on a bed of edible seaweed and of course specially seasoned crawfish tail meat. And there is no peeling shells; the works all done for you. Other bayou menu favorites include, jambalaya, a seasoned mixture of Andouille sausage, smoked ham, chicken, shrimp, crawfish, peppers and onions in a tomato based stew and served over white rice. The restaurant also features a seafood etouffÈe, a traditional Cajun dish that means ìto smotherî, which features Gulf shrimp, bay scallops, crawfish and fresh fish, tossed into a dark roux based sauce with garlic, green onions and spices and served with house rice and carrots.Other Crawdaddy’s favorites include a Black Angus Rib Eye, which is a 10 oz. cut of well marbled beef, seasoned with Creole spices and served with their famous carrots and three bayou shrimp. The Blackened Catfish is a masterpiece of flavors served on mango sauce and topped with Door County cherry chutney and spiced pecans then complimented with white rice and carrots. Be sure to leave room for a homemade southern classic dessert.Crawdaddy’s has a full bar offering fresh, hand crafted cocktails. They also have a great wine selection and craft brews on tap at all times. There is a nice outdoor patio and a private dining space, which can seat parties of up to forty.
