Fiesta Mexicana first opened in 1979 and is family-owned and operated. After coming to America, the ownerís mother started working in Mexican taquerias and fell in love with the cuisine and atmosphere. With an entrepreneurial mindset and drive, and the right chefs, she started her own business the Fiesta Mexicana. It has been run by her family ever since. In 1985 the family was able to open a second, larger location that now brings in most of their business. The original Uptown location has a more traditional Mexican ambiance compared to their newly renovated Lincoln Park location that gives the traditional taqueria a fun, modern twist. One of their specialties is the Carne Asada, which is a twelve-ounce Angus skirt steak marinated in fruit juices and cilantro and served with nopales salad, Spanish rice, and frijoles borrachos. In addition to traditional Mexican dishes, Fiesta Mexicana also offers lighter fares like fish and shrimp tacos. The lighter fare appeals to the college crowd and being so close to DePaul, Fiesta Mexicana receives a lot of their foot traffic.
