Happy Girl Kitchen Company doubles as a cafe and the only working cannery in Monterey County. Owners Todd and Jordan Champagne opened it 6 years ago. They were originally organic farmers and wanted to find a way to preserve the abundance of fruits and vegetables in the area. The ingredients they use in their food and products are completely organic and local. They cook and can their preserves in the cafe, and customers can see them working in the kitchen. Jordan and Toddís goal is to revive and celebrate the tradition and art of food preservation. Their product line enables people to enjoy the flavors of local produce all year round. The menu at Happy Girl Kitchen is all organic and vegetarian or vegan. Todd describes it as an ìadventure in local eating,î because the weekly menu items are not determined until the produce is picked out. They are then able to make creative new dishes based on the freshest seasonal ingredients. Todd recommends the lunch special. For $10 you can try a half sandwich, a soup, and a salad. The soup and sandwich specials change daily. Customers love their open faced avocado sandwiches. They also feature their fresh produce in cheese platters and with dips such as their hummus. The Lavender Lemonade is a must try at Happy Girl Kitchen. They also have refreshing fresh squeezed juices, teas, and coffee drinks. Happy Girl Kitchen has received awards including ìbest option for vegetarians,î ìbest pickle,î and several Good Foods awards for their Apricot Chili Jam. The cafe is also a retail shop where they sell their canned goods. For information on their product line, check out their website and Facebook page. They have photos and descriptions on all of their jams, marmalades, pickles, salsas, and more. The cafe has indoor and outdoor seating and they can seat up to 60 for special events. They are open daily for breakfast and lunch. Check out Happy Girl Kitchen for the amazing taste and tradition of locally sourced produce!
