In an era where restaurant consultants push owners to maximize every inch of floor space, packing tables together as tightly as possible, Jade Eatery and Lounge is an anomaly. Jade Eatery and Lounge actually has a Koi pond in the middle of the restaurant. However, one would expect nothing less from the visionary brother and sister team of Sam Kandhorov and Irina Gottesman. In 2006 they were the owners of a series of very successful fashion boutiques on Austin Street in Forest Hills. Lamenting the dearth of fun and exciting dining options in the area, the duo were toying with the idea of opening their own eatery. Irina tells us thatís when the universe intervened. While walking the dog in an unfamiliar area Sam stumbled upon the dilapidated space in the historic Forest Hills Inn on the very day the buildings owners were going to list it for lease. After deftly securing a two week option on the lease, Irina and Sam sought opinions of friends in the restaurant business as to whether to move forward. Despite discouraging advice, the siblings forged ahead. Converting the 8000 square space took ten months. No expense was spared in restoring the restaurant. Much of the old wood was restored to its former glory, including the original copper topped bar, known for hosting luminaries during the years the U.S. Open Tennis Championships were played nearby. The space evokes a feeling of peace, harmony and balance. It is a place to indulge your senses. Jade Eatery and Lounge is all encompassing. It has an Art Gallery, featuring local artists, and the location hosts private and public previews of the art installations there regularly. The World Shop features collectibles from around the globe such as custom jewelry, hookahs and Buddhas. Designed to accommodate large groups, the Dharma Lounge is an event space providing a private venue with an open floor plan offering flexibility in the layout, perfect for special events. It has been elegantly furnished with Moroccan imports to offer a cultural haven for guests seeking something extraordinarily special. Forest Hills best kept secret features a restaurant with an Asian Fusion theme. Popular and creative menu items include the Sushi Pizza featuring diced tuna & salmon, spicy mayo, tobiko, red onion, scallion and eel sauce. Also featured is a Sushi Burrito, the Jade-Rito, crafted withspicy salmon & tuna, red onion, tomato, lettuce, avocado, crunch, wasabi and spicy mayo with sriracha. Other selections include the Jade Beef, a filet mignon stir fried with nutmeg herb, tomato, asparagus, string bean and scallions. The Jade Salmon is accented with bell peppers, onion and mushroom and the Calcutta Chili Chicken is presented with green chili, garlic and cilantro. Despite being initially discouraged by advisors and facing the daunting task of remodeling a huge space, Irina and Sam have succeeded. The Jade Eatery and Lounge will celebrate its tenth anniversary in a few weeks, and is a testament to the good things that can happen when one has a vision and follows a dream.
