Maru Sushi & Grill originated in Okemos, Michigan in 2009. It is the brainchild of Robert Song and Executive Chef Moon who wanted to bring Michigan delicious, high quality Japanese cuisine in a trendy, relaxing, and comfortable setting. Since opening their first location in Okemos, Maru Sushi & Grill has established its products and brand and has expanded to several other locations. You can now find Maru Sushi & Grill in Grand Rapids, East Lansing, Midland, and Detroit with a Kalamazoo location in the works. Their Detroit restaurant is their most recent expansion that opened in November of 2016. It is located in a historic building, which held the Federal Reserve. The General Manager of the Detroit location is Thomas who signed on with Maru at their Grand Rapids location as a server. Through time Thomas rose through the ranks and was asked to open the Midland restaurant as a manager. He did a fantastic job and when the time came to open in Detroit, he again was asked to be the manager.
