Matador Restaurant, Taylor MI | Merchant Profile

Matador Restaurant has been family owned and operated by the Tejadas since its beginning in 1954. Originally it was used to throw small dances acting as a small club, but they could not afford the taxes and utilities so changed Matador to a drive-in. When Raymond Sr. left for the Korean War he gave control of the restaurant to his father Alfred until he returned. In the late 60s Ray Sr. returned from the war and relieved his father of ownership. In the 1970s Ray Sr. expanded the restaurant and by the end of the 80s was tired of running it, so he gave his children the choice to either keep operating Matador or to leave it behind. Four votes to one, they decided to keep Matador in the family and now Ray Jr. runs Matador with the help of his mother and four sisters. Matador Restaurant originally got their reputation from their tacos. Unlike many traditional Mexican restaurants, Matador only used flour tortillas over corn. When fresh ingredients were expensive and hard to come by in the early days of the restaurant, it was easier to use flour tortillas because the ingredients were plentiful and they could be made ahead of time. Therefore, Matador used flour tortillas in order to save time preparing and cooked them per order, a routine that has become their signature that they still use today. Today, one of their most popular items on Matadorís menu is their Botana. Botana is a Mexican appetizer consisting of chips smothered in refried beans, cheese, and guacamole. It became so popular as an appetizer that customers wanted it as an entrÈe so Matador decided to give the people what they wanted and create a larger size for dinner. All of Matadorís dishes are created from original family recipes from Mexico that have been handed down from generation to generation. They use the freshest ingredients they can find in order to make their authentic food daily. Matador even offers healthy vegetarian options as well. Matador does take reservations and on Wednesday children under the age of twelve eat free. Matador truly is a family-oriented restaurant filled with delicious food and friendly people. If youíre in the area and want to experience great food served by great people, then stop by Matador Restaurant soon!
