The M&C Cafe is located at 436 Belleville Avenue in New Bedford, Massachusetts. The M and C stand for Manny and Catherine. Manny and Catherine founded the restaurant in 1967 and their son Mike is now the Executive Chef. Mike tells us he grew up working in the restaurant. He pitched in to do whatever job was necessary. Mike graduated from college with a degree in Environmental Science, however, without any great job opportunities he returned to working in the restaurant. He went back to school part-time, earning culinary and baking degrees from Johnson & Wales University. The thing Mike loves about the business is that itís always different. He enjoys interacting with customers and seeing their reaction to the new dishes he creates. Mike feels strongly about using locally sourced ingredients. He tries to frequent producers within a five mile radius of the restaurant. He says itís important to him and to his customers to know where his food is coming from. Despite added expense, M&C Cafe uses only fresh local seafood. Up until a few years ago the restaurant pickled up to 100 bushels of peppers every fall. They would close up over the long Columbus Day Weekend and do the pickling. Menu favorites include the New Bedford Seafood Stew featuring littlenecks, scallops, shrimp, haddock, and mussels garnished with garlic toast. New Bedford is a leading scallop fishery and many of the dishes feature scallops. Such as The Grilled Scallops Appetizer with butternut squash and Basil Balsamic Vinaigrette and Fried Scallops featuring fresh New Bedford scallops that are lightly breaded. An M&C favorite is the Fish and Chips served with French fries or boiled potatoes and cole slaw or Portuguese ìMolho Cruî sauce.
