Sawaddee Thai Restaurant is located at 93 Hope Street in Providence. Sue, the chef and owner of the restaurant, was originally from Thailand. She emigrated to the United States in 1978. Before entering the restaurant business she worked as a nurse in Chicago. In September of 1984 she opened the first Thai restaurant in the entire state of Rhode Island. In 1996 she opened Sawaddee, which means hello in Thai. Sue is proud of the fact she is introducing many diners to authentic Thai cuisine.Start your meal with an order of Sa-Tay: marinated chicken tenderloin, skewered and charcoal-grilled, served with classic home-style peanut sauce. Another popular appetizer is Angel Shrimp, which is marinated shrimp wrapped in a pastry shell, fried crispy and golden, and served with both chili sauce and plum sauce. A chef suggestion is the Bangkok Roasted Duck, a large serving of half roasted duck or a quarter roasted duck, topped with shrimp, onion, pineapple, curry sauce, and coconut milk. Northeast Style Thai dishes include Calamari, with lemongrass, onions, scallions, chili paste, and lime juice, and Lab Kai, with slliced chicken mixed with lime juice, chili, coriander, onions, and scallions. Be sure to leave room for dessert. Choices include Fresh Lychee Nuts, Fried Banana with ice cream or honey, and Green Tea ice cream.
