Taste of India opened in 1988 and was actually the very first Indian restaurant to open in Fremont, California. The Pabla family who came to the United States from India in the early 1980s owns Taste of India. They focus on using fresh, high-quality ingredients in order to create their authentic Indian dishes. When Taste of India first opened it was set in a very small shop. They focused on selling Indian sweets that were baked fresh daily. Overtime they were able to buy the barbershop next to their shop so they could expand their space. It was during this time that Taste of India began selling other Indian cuisine rather than just sweets. In 2007, they expanded once more and now can seat up to 100 people in their restaurant. Taste of India still features their homemade sweets that are on display in bakery showcases at the front of the restaurant. Their most popular baked good is their Jalebi that sells out every day. It is like a crispy funnel cake topped with syrup. The yeast culture and recipe that Taste of India uses to create their Jalebi has not changed since they opened in 1988 and is one of the things that sets Taste of India apart from other Indian restaurants. For lunch, Taste of India features a delicious buffet with a variety of different options to choose from. Their dinner service is prepared in a traditional order-off-the-menu style that features tons of authentic and modern dishes to choose from. One of Taste of Indiaís most popular dishes is their Chicken Tikka Masala, which is boneless chicken tikka cooked with onions and bell peppers in a creamy tomato sauce. Another one of their specialties is the Chole Bature that is deep fried bread that becomes very fluffy when oil is drizzled on top that is served with chana, onions, raita, and chutney. Before opening the Taste of India in Fremont, the Pabla family also owned and operated restaurants in India. Because of this long history in the food industry, customers often come into the Taste of India looking for specific Indian dishes they enjoyed in India. Even though the dish may not be on the menu, the chefs at Taste of India have the expertise to make special dishes upon request. Taste of India also serves beer and wine along with their hearty food. Most of the beers and wines are imported from India or have an Indian origin, but customers will also find domestic drinks available. Over the years, Taste of India has garnered a great reputation with the community and has even achieved a variety of different awards and recognitions. One of the most notable awards Taste of India received was being named ìBest Indian Restaurantî by the Argus Newspaper. Today, Taste of India carries on their legacy of providing fresh, authentic food and will be celebrating their 28th anniversary in May 2016. They just recently started making Kulfi, which is Indian ice cream that is traditionally served on a long stick. This dish reminds many customers of their childhoods back in India.
