Mitchell and Ashley Wakefield opened Tess in September of 2002, and has ever since been a staple to the Milwaukee area. One of Tessís signature appetizers is the ëSteamed Musselsí, enjoyed with coconut milk, chipotle powder, cilantro and mint. They tried to change the dish once, and customers petitioned to change it back! A newer appetizer that customers are crazy for are the ëBison Tostadasí, smoked and shredded buffalo shoulder over edamame hummus spread on a tostada shell, topped with caramelised onions and cabbage slaw. For the main course, try the ëBeef Tenderloiní, USDA choice petite fillet and truffled wild mushrooms in a red wine sauce served with green beans and mashed potatoes. The ëHouse Made Raviolií is also immensely popular – four big pillows of ravioli stuffed with pork and several cheeses -both aged and fresh – in white wine and marinara sauce. This dish can be ordered vegetarian or with Italian sausage crumbled on top.Tess specializes in gluten-free dining; a significant portion of the menu items are gluten-free or can be made gluten-free easily. Their ëFlourless Chocolate Cakeí served with a homemade coffee custard has been Tessís signature dessert since the restaurant opened. A newer delicious creation, ëButterscotch Budinoí, is a rich butterscotch pudding with a layer of sweet caramel sauce, whip cream and Hawaiian sea salt.Tess is known for their great wine and spirit list, but many first time visitors are surprised by the craft beer selection. About once a month Tess hosts a Beer Dinner, a night of five courses complemented by five different beers showcased by a local brewmaster and/or brewery owner. Eight months out of the year, from mid-April through the end of October, Tess has a heated canopy patio. On perfect summer nights, enjoy the outdoor patio and garden, half botanical, half vegetables, that are grown and used for specials in the restaurant. A great date spot, grab someone special and head to Tess.
