The Abbaye is located at 637 North 3rd Street in Philadelphia. When owner Marc Sonstein opened his restaurant 14 years ago, he wanted pay homage to the French and Belgian monks famous for brewing great beer. He tells us the name ìMonksî was already taken and he was pretty sure nobody would want to drink in a place called ìThe Monasteryî.  He chose the name Abbaye using the French and Belgian spelling of the English word abbey. Over the years The Abbaye has become known as having one of the best craft beer selections in Northern Liberties.  They are also known for their great food, all of which is homemade, using only the finest and freshest ingredients.The Abbaye provides a friendly and welcoming atmosphere with outstanding customer service. Appetizers at The Abbaye include: Sweet Potato Fries, Southern Belgium Fried Chicken Tenders with Frites, a Hummus Plate with grilled pita, roasted red peppers, crumbled feta & kalamata olives, and also the Abbaye Mussels with bacon, leeks, and garlic. The menuís specials change daily and can be found on the restaurant’s website. Recent specials included: a Maple Glazed Pork Chop with sweet potato mash and sweet dandelion greens. Also the Lamb Stew served with potato, onion, red pepper, carrots, and French beans. The Abbaye also always has vegetarian friendly fare. Recent veggie specials were: Vegan Lasagna with butternut squash sauce, sautÈed spinach, vegan meatballs, and crushed almonds. Also, the Vegan Meatball Sandwich and the Autumn Veggie Burger featuring pumpkin, oats, brown rice, and pepper pear relish served on a brioche. Other popular menu items include an Angus Beef Burger with a choice of toppings thatís served with lettuce, tomato, and fries. Also the gourmet Abbaye Cheesesteak, a Chimay marinated steak, grilled tomato, and onion with gruyere cheese on a roasted garlic aioli.
