Joe Occhi is the 3rd generation of chefs in his family and passed on the family legacy to his son as well. He is the owner of Valley Inn, which has been open since the 1950s. Joe Occhi learned the art of cooking from his father and grandfather, who are both chefs at the restaurant. Valley Inn has a small staff which mostly consists of members of the family. The atmosphere is Northeastern and European. Many of the customers are regulars who have been attending the restaurant for decades. Their dedication to quality and tradition is the key to their success.Valley Inn is located inside the former Cornell Farm mansion. Mario Occhi bought the house in 1957. It was previously owned by the Cornell family and was built in the 1600s. The history of the building adds to the dining experience. They often team up with the Portsmouth community theatre and do dinner theatre productions of the murder trial that took place there. Mario built the dining area himself using used materials including parts of an old Navy base.A lot of the menu items have remained there from the start, so regulars can always come back for their favorites. They are one of the only restaurants around to still serve chateubriand for two. Joe never sacrifices quality and continually uses Grade A beef, fresh seafood, and fresh ingredients. Food is housemade and never processed or packaged. They have local favorites like littleneck clams with chaurice, garlic, and onion. Pizzas are a more recent menu item, but have become very popular. The sauce and dough are a house recipe.Valley Inn is open for dinner Tuesday-Saturday, but often has private lunch events. They also have a function room which can be booked for weddings, retirement parties, business meetings, and more Take out is available as well.
