Located within a historic location at 223 South Sydenham Street, Vesper brings a classical feel back to simpler times, paired with food and drinks that date back several decades. The restaurant has revamped the vintage ambiance and brought the supper club vibe right into the twenty first century. Owner Brendon Smith and his team have transported history, and made it a place worth visiting while in the area. The three floor establishment offers a speakeasy, banquet hall, full bar, and the history behind it is enough to want to come. The Chef driven menu has something for everyone, and is perfect for a date night or just a night out with a couple of friends.Vesper has carried the same name since 1904 when it was opened by Irish Catholics as a location to socialize with one another. Through the 1920ís the speakeasy was adopted into the lower level and was the inspiration for Brendon to keep it right where he found it. After that, it became a power brokers club and was a location where senators, and city council members could all come and socialize exclusively. In fact, Frank Rizzo, a well known Philadelphia police officer and politician, had his own phone running to his booth to handle his business. The history ingrained into the building is enough to want to visit the restaurant, but the food and drinks surpass all expectations. After closing in 2008 and opening back up in April of 2015, this is the first time the general public has been able to enjoy the experience that Vesper has to offer. Vesper has always been driven by their Raw Bar and Brendon has implemented that into the new menu. Their Seasonal Oysters are worth a try, as well as the Chilled Jumbo Prawns. The Colossal Crab is also a great option, served with Garlic and Herb Remoulade and Sriracha Cocktail Sauce. The menu is meat centric, just as one would expect from an old fashioned restaurant. Their protein choice is extensive and has something to fit anyoneís taste. Their sixteen ounce Prime Cut New York Strip is bone in and cooked to the customerís desire, delivering a rich, hearty meal. They also carry fresh, seasonal fish, their King Salmon being very popular when available. Vesper brings their menu full circle with their drink menu, keeping it simple, yet refined, and classic at the same time. You won’t find any crazy, colorful drinks here, but that is part of the Vesper experience. It lends a Mad Men style feel, and what better reason than to try the best Old Fashion in Philadelphia.Vesper prides themselves on providing a 360 degree dining experience. Coming in, each customer will be able to experience a great drink at the bar, a satisfying meal, and to close the night out, have some drinks at the speakeasy while enjoying live music. This experience is authentic as it gets, and changes the pace of a normal restaurant, making things interactive and interesting. The nights are bold, and the experience is worth it.
